After the Battle of Loos in September and October, 1915, 47th Division, including 23rd London of 142 Brigade remained in that area of the front for the rest of the year. On the last day of the year the battalion moved into the front line near Nouex-les-Mines in a sector known as the “Hairpin”. They relieved 22nd London who had been hit hard the previous day when the enemy had blown a series of mines beneath them and had pounded their positions with a heavy bombardment. Although the 31st December, 1915,  was a quieter day there was still enough hostile shelling to cause casualties among the ranks of 23rd London and two men never got to see the new year, one of them being Henry Marr.
